About this directory

This is the official register of the monasteries of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. It is maintained by the Synodal Commission of the UOC for Monastery Affairs — a standing church body responsible for the life of monastic houses: it gathers and verifies information about them, keeps in contact with the eparchies and prepares materials for the Holy Synod. The Commission operates at the Holy Dormition Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, and this site was established by Decree No. 1 of 21 April 2018.

What each entry contains

Every row in this list leads to its own page. There you will find the name of the house and its patronal dedication, whether it is a men's or a women's monastery, its eparchy and jurisdiction, the settlement it stands in and its position on the map, a means of contact where the house has made one public, and links to its own website or page where these exist.

Historical accounts and their sources

Some entries carry a historical account: when the house was founded, what befell it, when it was closed and when it was restored. Such an account is written only from verified sources, and every statement in it carries a reference to a source you can open and read for yourself. Where the research is not yet complete, the entry gives the reference data alone — we do not publish what has not been confirmed, and we do not repeat hearsay. Accounts are added gradually, house by house.

Finding your way around

The list is arranged so that a house can be found by its name, by its eparchy or by its location. If you are looking for a monastery on the ground, or planning a journey to one, it is easier to begin with the map of monasteries: each house is marked in its own place, and every marker leads straight to its page. And if travelling to church is not possible for you at present, services from the monasteries of the UOC can be watched online, as live broadcasts.

If you notice an error

Information about monastic houses changes: superiors change, telephone numbers change, the standing of a house itself can change. If you see data that is out of date or inaccurate — and all the more so if you write on behalf of the house or of its eparchy — please write to us.
