Entry of the Mother of God Convent

The community was founded in 1904 by Volodymyr (de Repta), Metropolitan of Bukovyna and Dalmatia, to support the sanitary service in case of emergencies, epidemics or floods². Its statute named the care of the sick and concern for them as the community's principal task; the sisters also helped to look after children in orphanages².

In 1960 the community's buildings were taken away and outsiders were settled in them: the main block housed in turn a kindergarten, a boarding school, workshops and the offices of departments of the regional education authority². The sisters were moved to the Khreshchatyk monastery, emptied after its brotherhood had been dispersed; in 1962 the sisterhood itself was dispersed and the monastery finally destroyed - some of the sisters went to other communities, the rest carried on their monastic life in the world².

The monastery was returned to the eparchy on 20 October 1994². On 27 December 1994 the Holy Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, on the report of Archbishop Onufriy of Chernivtsi and Bukovyna, by journal no. 29 blessed the opening of the Holy Entrance convent in Chernivtsi¹. The community's statute was registered on 25 May 1995².

In the courtyard of the revived community a new Holy Trinity cathedral was built, with an underground church in honour of St John the Hut-dweller; in it stand reliquaries with particles of the relics of the martyrs of Choziba and of St Kuksha the New, together with other holy objects². The foundation stone of the cathedral was laid by Metropolitan Onufriy of Chernivtsi and Bukovyna².

On 4 December 2019, the feast of the Entrance of the Mother of God into the Temple, the Primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church led the festal service in the monastery and the procession around the church; that year the community was marking a triple jubilee - one hundred and fifteen years since its founding, twenty-five since its restoration and fifteen since the building of the Holy Trinity cathedral². On 4 June 2024 the community was visited by the Primate of the Orthodox Church in America, who learned about its monastic life, spoke with the sisters and venerated its holy things³.
