"Assuage My Sorrows" Icon of the Mother of God stauropegial Convent

The Monastery of the Icon of the Mother of God "Assuage My Sorrows" is a stauropegial convent in the settlement of Horodnytsya, Zhytomyr region^{1, 2}. According to the Zhytomyr eparchy, the Horodnytsia monastery to which this community belongs unites, in the tradition of the ancient Church, two monastic communities - a male one dedicated to Saint George and a female one dedicated to this icon².

In 1744 a wooden church of Saint George the Victorious was built here, and in 1891 a women's monastic community was founded at it^{1, 2}. In 1903 a stone Saint George cathedral was built nearby, and the old wooden church was rededicated to Saint Symeon the Stylite². In 1914 the small women's community was abolished, and a men's monastery was established in its place^{1, 2}.

The convent was closed in 1923^{1, 2}, and in the 1930s the Saint Symeon church was destroyed¹; from 1945 the stone cathedral functioned as an ordinary parish church¹. Monastic life was revived here in 1979, when the parish was headed by the monk Oleksandr, now Archbishop of Horodnytsia, a vicar of the Kyiv Metropolia². According to one account, the community revived that same year already united male and female communities¹; according to another, a separate women's community has existed at the monastery since 2006².

The monastery was officially opened on 23 November 1989, and in 1994 it received stauropegial status from the Blessed Metropolitan of Kyiv and all Ukraine^{1, 2}. In 1995 a two-storey stone cell building was erected, in which in 1997 a heated church dedicated to the same icon was consecrated²; according to the monastery's own website, this church was fitted out in one of the residential buildings in 1996-1997¹.

On 6 April 2025, on the fifth Sunday of Great Lent, Archbishop Oleksandr of Horodnytsia performed a monastic tonsure of one of the sisters at the Horodnytsia convent³.
