St. Elijah's Convent

St. Elijah's Convent stands in the village of Ternov-Pishohora, in Tyachiv district, in Zakarpattia. One of the hamlets of the village of Ternovo is called "Pisha Hora," or "Pishohora"¹.

In 1998 an Orthodox parish community in honour of the Holy Prophet Elijah was founded here; over several years it built a church and a house beside it¹. The church was consecrated on 4 December 2002¹.

An archimandrite became rector of the parish and introduced the parishioners to the order of monastic worship; impressed by this, the parishioners petitioned the diocesan administration to found a monastery at the church¹. On 27 December 2002 the Holy Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church blessed the opening of the convent¹.

In Synod documents of 2004 the house still appears as a men's monastery: Journal No. 6 of 9 March 2004 calls it "St. Elijah's Men's Monastery"², and Journal No. 37 of 28 December that same year calls it the same³.

Yet on 2 August 2022, on the feast of the Holy Prophet Elijah, with the blessing of Metropolitan Marko of Khust and Vynohradiv, the Liturgy "at the women's St. Elijah's Monastery" was celebrated by the vicar bishop Symeon of Uholka, who afterwards consecrated the convent's refectory⁴.

The convent's second patronal feast is the Presentation of the Theotokos in the Temple⁵. Among the convent's holy things are particles of the relics of Saints Job and Amphilochius of Pochaiv, of St Alexis of Carpatho-Russia, and of other saints⁶.
