Protection of the Mother of God Monastery

The Protection of the Mother of God Monastery of the Mukachevo Diocese stands in the village of Vorochevo, Perechyn district, in Zakarpattia. The Synod act on its opening also names the tract in which the house arose, Kalynkuv Horb¹.

The monastery's own site places its foundation in 2006².

Its canonical opening fell on 21 February 2012. The Holy Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, having heard the report of Archbishop Feodor of Mukachevo and Uzhhorod, blessed the opening of the Protection of the Mother of God Monastery in the village of Vorochevo, Perechyn district, Zakarpattia region; this is Journal No. 21 of that session¹.

As of 2012, the house's own site writes, the monastery had the church of the Protection of the Mother of God, the dedication from which its own name comes².

On 31 October 2015 Archbishop Feodor, who governs the Mukachevo Diocese, celebrated a hierarchical service at Vorochevo, and before it consecrated a new church of the Transfiguration and its altar³. The diocesan publication called this the first church in honour of the Transfiguration of the Lord in the history of the region, and a year later repeated the claim, explaining that until then the church history of the Perechyn area had had no such church on its territory^{3, 4}.

Since then the diocese, in its lists of churches inviting the faithful to services for the Transfiguration of the Lord, has entered the Vorochevo house with a note that the Transfiguration is its second patronal dedication⁵.

The second place bound up with the house is Uzhhorod. On 7 June 2012 Archbishop Feodor consecrated there a new spiritual and medical centre named Pokrov, and the Synodal Information and Education Department of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, reporting the opening, noted that the spiritual care and the upkeep of the centre would be provided by the Vorochevo house itself⁶.

By the same report, the centre was preceded by a charitable medical clinic that had worked in Uzhhorod for more than three years, and in its three-storey building, beside the outpatient department, the operating block and the inpatient ward, a working church was arranged⁶.

Diocesan reports of 2015 and 2016 described the work of the house in the same terms: besides its spiritual, educational and missionary work, the monastery carried out spiritual and medical rehabilitation, treating people on the basis of the Pokrov centre it had founded in Uzhhorod^{3, 4}.

On 21 August 2016 Archbishop Feodor visited the monastery on an archpastoral visit and, together with the clergy of the house and of the Perechyn deanery, celebrated the Divine Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom; he was met also by the pupils of the monastery's Sunday school⁴.

In the diocesan division the house belongs to the Perechyn deanery. In 2016 the dean counted 26 churches and two monasteries in the district, this male house and the convent at Zarichevo, and noted that both monastic houses take part in the humanitarian and missionary projects of the deanery⁷. The deanery's page on the diocesan site, updated in 2025, likewise gives two monasteries in it, one male and one female⁸.
