St. George's female metochion

The Saint George metochion in Rivne is not a monastery of its own but the town metochion of the Horodok Saint Nicholas convent: the encyclopaedia lists it among the convent's holdings, together with the skete of Righteous Anna at Onyshkivtsi and the Ascension metochion at Mlyniv¹. The metochion's church is consecrated in honour of the Great Martyr George².

The Horodok convent itself was founded in 1516 on an island near the village of Horodok as a skete of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra¹. On 2 August 2026 the 510th anniversary of the first mention of monastic life on that island was marked there: in a charter of 1516 Prince Kostiantyn Ostrozky confirmed the ownership of Horodok to the Kyiv-Pechersk monastery, and the Lavra's skete was founded there at that time³. The community was restored in 1993, when thirteen nuns settled it; today, by the encyclopaedia's figure, there are more than a hundred and twenty nuns, and the convent's chief holy object is the gracious image of the Mother of God "Miloserdna" (of Kozelshchyna), given to it by the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra in 2000¹.

The metochion's life can be read from the eparchy's reports. On 26 November 2022, the day of Saint John Chrysostom, a festal Divine Liturgy was celebrated in the church of the Great Martyr George, led by two bishops; the superior of the Horodok convent prayed at the service, and the convent sisters' choir sang. After the Liturgy a rite of glorification was served before the icon of Saint John Chrysostom².

The metochion's sisters sing at the parent convent as well: at the festal Liturgy of 2 August 2026, led by the Primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, the singing was done by the choir of the Horodok convent, the sisters of the Saint George metochion of the town of Rivne, and the students of the Horodok theological school³.
