Kazan Icon of the Mother of God Monastery

The Kazan Icon of the Mother of God Monastery, a house of monks, stands in the village of Tyshiv in the Volovets district of the Zakarpattia region and belongs to the Mukachevo eparchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church².

The house was founded in 1997, and the first divine service in it was held on 21 July of the same year, on the day of the celebration of the Kazan icon of the Mother of God^{1, 6}. Through 1998 the services were held in a temporary wooden church¹.

On 5 November 1998 the Holy Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church considered the report of Yevfymii, Archbishop of Mukachevo and Uzhhorod, on the opening of a monastery of monks in honour of the Kazan icon of the Mother of God in the village of Tyshiv, Volovets district, and blessed that opening³.

The church allegiance of this locality changed in those same years: on 29 July 1994 the Synod separated a distinct Khust eparchy out of the Mukachevo eparchy and included in it, among others, the Volovets district⁴. On 22 November 2000 the Synod attached the Volovets district to the Mukachevo eparchy - "because of its territorial remoteness from the town of Khust"⁵.

By 2000 the brethren, led by Archimandrite Makarii (Futsur), together with the residents of the surrounding villages, had built in the house a church of Saint Sergius of Radonezh^{1, 6}. The church was built after the model of the church of Saint Mikhei of Radonezh in the Trinity-Sergius Lavra¹. Archimandrite Makarii died in 2007^{1, 6}.

From 2001 the building of the residential blocks went on at the monastery¹. According to the eparchy's account of the history of the house, the brothers' block was finished four years after the church was built⁶.

The dedication of the house is the Kazan icon of the Mother of God, while the only church of the monastery named in the eparchy's description is that of Saint Sergius of Radonezh⁶. The eparchy calls the day of the memory of Saint Sergius the second patronal feast of the house⁸.

On 21 July 2017, on the day of the appearance of the Kazan icon of the Mother of God, the house marked the twentieth anniversary of its founding with an archieratic service; a great number of processions of the faithful came to the monastery, and the clergy of the eparchy concelebrated at the service together with guests from other eparchies, among them the Lviv eparchy⁷.

In the account published by the eparchy in 2017 it is stated that five brethren carry out obedience in the house⁶. There is a large apiary and a farm at the monastery⁹. The Mukachevo youth brotherhood in honour of Saint Sergius of Radonezh has for many years come to the house to pray and to help the brethren in their daily obedience⁹.
