A fire broke out on the evening of 10 December 2025 in the brethren's building of the Holy Protection men's monastery in the village of Kostryno, Zakarpattia, the Information and Education Department of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) reported, citing the State Emergency Service (SES) in Zakarpattia oblast. The department described the building as a one-storey wooden structure with an attic floor and said that nobody was inside during the fire.
Metropolitan Feodor of Mukachevo and Uzhhorod reported the fire on Facebook, Ukrinform wrote. Suspilne, citing the SES, wrote that rescuers received the report at 19:29 on 10 December and that clergy living nearby were the first to notice the flames. The service also said that, with no access roads or water sources near the monastery, rescuers drew water from a local pond, and that the fire was localised at 20:59 and fully extinguished at 22:00.
According to the rescuers whom the department quotes, the fire spread quickly through the wooden structures but did not threaten the Church of the Protection of the Mother of God, a wooden architectural monument beside the building. The SES said, as reported by Suspilne, that nobody was hurt and that law-enforcement officers were establishing the cause.
Reports on the fire area differ. The SES figure that Suspilne cites is 170 square metres, at the moment the fire was localised; the service's spokeswoman in Zakarpattia oblast, according to Ukrinform, spoke of 150 square metres while the fire was being fought; the UOC department, also citing the SES, gives 17 square metres. The department reports that the brethren's building was completely destroyed.
